Montréal: YUL Airport Hotel or City Stay?
5 min readSources checked
Transport fares, stops and property conditions can change. Check the linked operator or property before relying on them.
Scope: For accommodation linked to Montréal–Trudeau (YUL) or a Montréal visit. The choices are search areas, not a reviewed hotel shortlist.
Quick answer
Start near YUL when reaching the airport or getting to a room after a late arrival is your main priority. Start downtown for a city-based itinerary, or in Old Montréal when your plans centre on the old city and waterfront. Compare the complete journey before choosing the cheapest room.
Choose for the night you need, then for the trip you want. An airport-area room serves a different purpose from a base for city outings. Start with your flight time and your next day’s plans, then compare the room and the journeys together.
Choose for this part of your trip
These are different starting points. Your flight time, activities and complete transfer route decide which is useful.
Near YUL
- Start here when
- The airport is your next destination, or you want to settle after a late arrival.
- The tradeoff
- City outings add another journey. A nearby hotel may still require a shuttle or vehicle transfer.
Downtown
- Start here when
- Your plans centre on downtown addresses, meetings or onward transport.
- The tradeoff
- You still need an airport journey. Compare the walk from the actual stop to the property entrance.
Old Montréal
- Start here when
- Your plans focus on the old city and waterfront.
- The tradeoff
- Compare the final leg with luggage and the return airport route; a central city label is not a transfer plan.

General advice: applies wherever you fly
Choose an airport night for an airport task
If the next important task is catching a flight, compare an airport-area night against the trip from a city hotel. A late arrival can also make a nearby room useful. Confirm when the room becomes available: booking a calendar date is not permission to arrive at any hour.
For several city days, compare staying in one place with moving to an airport hotel for the final night. Moving means packing, travelling and checking in again. That extra move should solve a specific problem.

Airport hotel does not always mean a walk
Marriott identifies its Montréal Airport Marriott as an in-terminal hotel. Its published policy excludes pets, with service animals treated separately. This is a location and policy example, not a recommendation or a claim of availability.
For another property advertised near YUL, compare the actual terminal route. Ask where a shuttle stops, whether it needs a reservation and what happens outside its operating hours. A map distance does not answer those questions.

Use the 747 route to compare a city stay
STM lists the 747 airport stop at door 28, with routes serving downtown and Lionel-Groulx. Its page lists C$11.25 per person with 24-hour Zone A validity. Check the current fare and service notices before travelling.
Compare the stop with the exact hotel entrance. Count every change and the final walk with your luggage. For a night journey, check the timetable for that date rather than assuming a daytime route will work.

Choose downtown or Old Montréal from your plans
Put your main addresses on a map before choosing. For meetings or outings around Place Ville Marie, begin with downtown addresses. For an itinerary centred on the old city and waterfront, begin with Old Montréal. Choose the location that removes repeated journeys from your own itinerary.
With a stroller or mobility aid, compare the complete route: drop-off, entrance, lift and room. A neighbourhood label does not establish step-free access.
General advice: applies wherever you fly
Compare one complete total
Use the same dates, currency and room occupancy for every option. Add mandatory taxes, parking, airport transfers and any meal you expect to buy separately. Compare cancellation terms alongside the total.
For a family, compare the actual beds and room capacity, not only the headline room price. With a pet, get the property’s acceptance and fees for your animal before committing.
